REMOTE Stop the Bleed Part 3 Wound Packing first page

bone fragments would result in a puncture exposure incident for the responder.

During a class meeting show the above video. Ask your students which action in the video might not be safe. The answer is blindly sticking fingers into a wound is dangerous as there may be loose bone shards that could puncture the fingers of the rescuer. Using breakout rooms, have students answer questions 4, 5, 6, 9 & 10 below. Talk it over and determine if they agree or not with you regarding the video. Bring everyone back together and have a spokesperson from each group report.

3. Talk it over with your neighbor. Can you figure out what part of the video your teacher might disagree with?

4.

What did you think about the video?

5. Some people are bothered by the sight of blood. How do you think being involved with the actual event might differ from watching a video about it? Share your thoughts with your neighbor. 6. Do you still have your disposable gloves (from previous Stop the Bleed training)? If you do not, your teacher has boxes of gloves, take 1 pair in a larger size then you would normally wear, if available.

If your students took Stop the Bleed Part I: Hand hygiene, ask if they still have their gloves. If they do, they can use their gloves for the activities.

7. Why take a larger pair of gloves than you normally wear? In an emergency, it is much easier to put on gloves that are somewhat big on you. You will struggle to get “snug” gloves on in an emergency.

Ask students what they have at home that may work.

8. Any idea what “hemostatic” gauze might be? Take 5 minutes and research it. Be sure your neighbor understands the meaning also. Hemostatic agents are products which have an advanced capability to stop bleeding . Hemostatic agents are available in two forms; as a granular powder or embedded in a dressing such as, a gauze and sponge. The hemostatic dressing is soaked with a substance which accelerates the clotting process.

Have your students do a quick 5-minute research on hemostatic gauze.

9. Why would you try to keep “gawkers” away from the victim?

Cell phone pictures and video clips do not respect the victim’s right to privacy and their right to not appear on social media – think how they would feel if that was their Mom or Dad.
