Scholastic Tourney 2025
April 7 - 8, 2025
Hosted by Pleasant Plains Middle School & Sangamon County Jr. High Schoolmasters
Welcome to the Sangamon County Jr. High School Scholastic Bowl Tournament Sponsored by the Sangamon County Jr. High Schoolmasters ’ Association On behalf of the Sangamon County Schoolmasters, welcome to this event. The Sangamon County Schoolmasters are made up of principal leaders from the area coun ty schools. Participating schools are Athens, Auburn, Chatham Glenwood, Greenview, New Berlin, Pawnee, Pleasant Plains, Riverton, Rochester, Tri - City, and Williams ville. The Schoolmasters are proud of all of the hard work that our students demon strate. We are appreciative of all of the efforts and support that you give to your child as well as all children! The Schoolmasters Association is able to provide students a variety of opportunities including activities in academics, athletics, music, leadership, and char acter as a result of your support of this event. Although students are members of opposing schools, they are friendly rivals. Their par ticipation in sports and extra - curricular activities reflects the essence of Inter scholastic competition. As a friendly reminder during sporting events, sports manship is an expectation, so please let the players play, let the coaches coach, let the officials officiate, and let the spectators be positive. Dear Guests:
Thank you to all the schools, teams, individuals, and sponsors for all your hard work making this event a success. Without your contributions, this would not be possible. Good luck to our participants and enjoy!!
Sincerely,
Schoolmasters Leadership Council Megan Doerfler, Riverton Kim Poole, Rochester Clay Shoufler, Williamsville

A TEAM ONLY - It is advised that you bring no more than 10 players.
GAME PLAY 1. 24 TOSS UP QUESTIONS - Best of 3 Toss Up TIE BREAKER - NO BONUS 2. ONE TIME OUT PER TEAM / PER HALF (subs can be made at TO, half, or before OT). 3. Students will have 10 SECONDS to BUZZ after the end of the question. 4. Students will have 3 SECONDS to ANSWER after being recognized to answer. 5. Other team has 3 SECONDS to REBOUND buzz after a missed toss up question. 6. A PROTEST should be made immediately, before the next question is started. Moderator will be instructed to accept answers from the script ONLY (moderators have discretion). 7. SPELLING QUESTIONS are like a spelling bee. IF you start, you can start over, but IF you change letters from the first time you spell the word, you will be wrong. 8. Players ARE allowed to write on PAPER for math or spelling. They should NOT be conferring during the reading of the question or writing notes to a teammate during the reading of the question.
TIE BREAKERS
In the event a TIE EXISTS after QUESTION 24, teams will play BEST TWO OF THREE TOSS UPS. IF after BEST TWO OF THREE TOSS UPS, teams are STILL TIED, TEAMS PLAY SUDDEN DEATH ONE TOSS UP. A 2-0 team after Monday will advance to play Tuesday. Any 2-0 teams will be seeded by TOTAL POINTS scored on Monday. (Therefore most points scored will be 1 seed) ---------- EXAMPLE SCENARIO ----------
Pool A winner = 2 - 0 scored 350 points in two games. Pool B winner = 2 - 0 scored 410 points in two games. For Tuesday, Pool B winner would play the team with the fourth place ranking in the semifinal. For Tuesday, Pool A winners would play the other semifinal.
TIE BREAKERS
Assuming all three pools have a 2-0 team at the end of Monday (advance to Tuesday and are seeded by points scored) The 1-1 teams in the pools will be compared to determine the 4th semi final spots for Tuesday. ---------- Example Scenario Pool A winner = 2 - 0 scored 550 points in two games. Pool A runner up = 1-1 scored 480 points in two games. Pool B winner = 2 - 0 scored 610 points in two games. Pool B runner up = 1-1 scored 470 points in two games. Pool C winner = 2 - 0 scored 480 points in two games. Pool C runner up = 1-1 scored 400 points in two games Tuesday’s semi final matches would be:
Pool B winner v. Pool A runner up Pool A winner v. Pool C winner
TIE BREAKERS
IN the event that a TIE exists at the end of MONDAY to determine seedings for TUESDAY:
1. IF three teams in a pool are 1 - 1 and all beat one another, the next tie breaker is:
TOTAL POINTS SCORED IN THE TWO GAMES - ( HIGHER is BETTER) HIGHEST SCORERS ADVANCE and WINS POOL
IF TIED AFTER HEAD TO HEAD and TOTAL POINTS SCORED -
POINTS SCORED AGAINST ( LOWER IS BETTER)
2. IF TIED AFTER HEAD TO HEAD, TOTAL POINTS SCORED, and TOTAL POINTS AGAINST -
THREE TOSS UP TIE BREAKER
---------- EXAMPLE SCENARIO.
Pool A team 1 is 1-1 and scored 485 points in 3 games
Pool A team 2 is 1-1 and scored 530 points in 3 games
Pool A team 3 is 1-1 and scored 475 points in 3 games.
Team 2 WINS the POOL Pool Winner is higher than wild card 1-1 team.
TIE BREAKERS
---------- Example Scenario
Pool A team 1 is 1-1 and scored 475 points in 2 games. 260 points scored against.
Pool A team 2 is 1-1 and scored 530 points in 2 games. 330 points scored against.
Pool A team 3 is 1-1 and scored 475 points in 2 games. 230 points scored against.
Team 2 WINS the pool and advances to the semi final spot on Tuesday.
Team 3 is eligible for the semi final spot on Tuesday.
